This summer I spent 28 days in drug rehab…
…as
an intern for a Community Health Project at COMPASS (Comprehensive Addiction
Service Systems).
I had to lead group therapy several days for the
addicts. The themes of the sessions were
not always specific to drugs. I tried to
incorporate spiritual topics. Following
a session where I managed to encourage several people to read their Bibles and
find out specifically why God wanted them to be drug/alcohol free. I opened the session with this excerpt from a
book with daily readings.

Better Late Than Never
“If I had
to live my life again, I’d make all the same mistakes –only sooner.
-Tallulah Bankhead
It may already be too late to make certain mistakes. Too bad.
You missed your window of opportunity. You should have started sooner. Promise yourself to make every possible
blunder at least once before you die.
Today I will make enough mistakes to make up for the times
when I did everything right.

Embracing Cowardice
“I’m very
brave generally,” he went on in a low voice, “only today I happen to have a
headache.”
-Lewis Carroll
There are a million excuses, and they’re all wonderful-from
the most banal to the most preposterous.
You can find the perfect excuse to avoid any challenge, any sign of
growth or change. Excuses are your loyal
friends and allies.
Today I will celebrate avoidance.
If you read all that congratulations! Now how would you lead a whole therapy
session on this and tie it with previous sessions?
More to come on how to incorporate the Bible and God into a
secular institution.
